The sad thing about finally attaining recognition is that it easily gets lost. In the U.S., Sandy Denny was probably well known only for guesting on Led Zeppelin's "The Battle of Evermore." But in the U.K., well, I recall a photo from the early '70s of Sandy, smiling and next to Rod Stewart. Each were named New Musical Express Vocalist of the Year, female and male.
Yet as old friend Richard Thompson noted, "We don't hear Sandy Denny on the radio these days--even Nick Drake sneaks into the odd Easy Listening show."
"The Banks of the Nile" got me through some really hard times and I won't forget Sandy Denny; playing the song on my radio show last week was a thrill.
